EPC Applications Using eGaN Technology Shown at 2016
Applied Power Electronics and Exposition Conference (APEC)

GaN technology is being designed into many end-customer applications. At APEC 2016, the premier power conversion conference, EPC showcased more than 25 applications where GaN technology is Changing the Way We Live. In this series of short videos, EPC application engineering experts present eGaN® FETs and ICs in a wide range of applications including products that customers are currently taking to market.

Application Demonstrations:

eGaN Technology Changing the Way We Live

GaN Application Demo 1: eGaN Technology Changing the Way We Live: Demonstrations from APEC 2016
At APEC 2016, the premier power conversion conference, EPC showcased more than 25 applications where GaN is Changing the Way We Live. In this video, Alex Lidow, CEO, takes a “walk through our booth,” showing eGaN FETs and ICs in a wide range of applications including single stage 48 V to POL DC-DC conversion, a 700 W 1/8th Brick DCX, RF amplifier for MRI medical equipment, wireless power transfer, LED lighting, class-D audio, LiDAR mapping, and envelope tracking.

Wireless Power Transfer Demo

GaN Application Demo 2: eGaN Technology for Wireless Power Transfer
EPC offers development boards and eGaN products for a wide power range for both the transmit and receive sides of a wireless power transfer system. In this video, we show the use of eGaN products in the common AirFuel and Qi standard systems, including a multi-mode system that can operate in accordance with either standard. In addition to EPC demonstrations, several customers, such as WiTricity, Solace Power, and Gill Electronics, wireless power end products are presented.

eGaN FETs for LiDAR

GaN Application Demo 3: eGaN FETs for LiDAR (Light Distancing and Ranging)
LiDAR (Light Distancing and Ranging) uses pulsed lasers to rapidly create a three dimensional image or map of a surrounding area. This technology is rapidly gaining traction in applications where this increased accuracy is vital, such as autonomous vehicles and augmented reality systems. In this video, we discuss the need for speed and accuracy of the laser and the capability of eGaN FETs to enable ultra-short transition times of < 1ns.

eGaN FETs for Envelope Tracking

GaN Application Demo 4: eGaN FETs for Envelope Tracking
Envelope tracking is a power supply technique for improving the energy efficiency of radio frequency power amplifiers by precisely tracking the power demand, as compared to today’s fixed-power systems. Envelope Tracking can double base station efficiency and increase cell phone talk time. In this video, we discuss the ultra-fast performance of our 60 W, 20 MHz bandwidth, 4-Phase, LTE compatible envelope tracking demonstration board using eGaN FETs.

eGaN FETs, ICs, and Modules for 48 V to POL DC-DC Conversion

GaN Application Demo 5: eGaN FETs, ICs, and Modules for 48 V to POL DC-DC Conversion
Rethink server power architecture with GaN technology. GaN allows the elimination of the intermediate bus converter currently used. In this video, we discuss two demonstrations showing; 1) a single stage conversion from 48 V to 1V at 40 A, using a GaN-based module from Texas Instruments, and 2) a 48 V to 1.8 V at 20 A single-stage hard-switched buck converter using eGaN ICs.

700 W DCX DC-DC Conversion in Eighth-Brick DOSA Form Factor

GaN Application Demo 6: eGaN Technology Enabling 700 W DCX DC-DC Conversion in Eighth-Brick DOSA Form Factor
This video showcases an 700 W DC-DC converter in an eighth-brick DC-DC converter running in DCX mode. This demo shows that eGaN FETs enable higher power density in traditional DC-DC brick footprints, due to gallium nitride’s superior switching characteristics, thermal performance, and small size.
