GaN technology is getting exciting…end applications are emerging!

Jun 07, 2016

As the VP of Sales and Marketing for EPC, I have attended a number of power electronics industry trade shows since the beginning of the year. What has struck me about these shows is the increasing number of end product demonstrations enabled by GaN FET and IC technology.

At CES in January, APEC in March, PCIM Europe in May, and most recently, at Computex Asia last month, GaN applications were front and center. Here are a few examples of what I saw:

Magnetic resonance solution for wireless charging multiple devices
WiTricity VP of Product Management, Sanjay Gupta discusses wireless power with EPC, VP of Sales for Asia, Stephen Tsang

Wireless Power could be seen at every turn at Computex; for example, WiTricity and Dell showed their magnetic resonance solution for wireless charging multiple devices – phones, tablets and computers -- at a distance…

The Vice President of Product Management at WiTricity and our VP of Sales in Asia discuss the attributes of using magnetic resonant technology for wireless power systems. What’s in store for augmented reality applications
Augmented reality "flying high" at Computex Asia 2016

Augmented Reality applications came alive at CES where gamers, and those just looking to experience “other worlds,” put on goggles and became a part of the action…

In the photo, a show-goer flies like a bird over New York! For a full “bird’s eye view” of what’s in store for augmented reality applications, see http://www.cnet.com/videos/birdly-vr-htc-vive-computex/

Single stage 48 V to 1 V power conversion using GaN

DC-DC Conversion for the Data Center, specifically efficiently converting 48 V to 1 V in a single stage became a reality at APEC 2016, where a GaN module, combining a TI driver and EPC eGaN FET, was on display. This module has the potential of revolutionizing the power conversion architecture fundamental to data centers. For a look at the module is operation see… http://epc-co.com/epc/DesignSupport/TrainingVideos/eGaNDemos/eGaN-FETs-ICs-48-V-to-POL-DC-DC-Conversion.aspx

From what I have seen, there is no doubt that GaN technology is gaining traction due to its superior performance…especially now that it is cost competitive with the aging MOSFET!

My visits to innovative customers designing end products using GaN, coupled with my experiences at this year’s trade shows, only reinforces that GaN is on the move!
