Automotive GaN Applications: Time of Flight (ToF)/Lidar

Time of Flight (ToF)/Lidar for Car Vision
GaN Enables Advanced Autonomy: See Farther, Faster, Better

There are many different types of sensors used for the ADAS systems in cars. There is long-range vision for adaptive cruise control and for future autonomous vehicle control and operation. There is also short-range vision for collision avoidance, backup sensors, parking assistance, etc…

As the stages of autonomous vehicles advance, ToF/Lidar systems will become the most cost effective and, more importantly, the safest way to achieve full autonomy.

GaN FETs and ICs are widely adopted in lidar circuits for autonomous vehicles, where they offer several key benefits when driving any type of laser; VCSEL, edge emitting (EEL), etc.

  • Faster switching for shorter pulses and better range resolution
  • Smaller footprint which enables high power density, low inductance, and compact solutions
  • Higher efficiency at higher pulse repetition rate
  • Superior reliability beyond the typical automotive lifetime

GaN is the ideal solution helping all ranges of lidar systems see farther, faster, and better.
