GaN transistors and integrated circuits are a vital element in the “eyes” of autonomous vehicles, robotics and drones by powering the lasers used in ToF/lidar systems.

There are two types of time-of-flight systems Direct Time of Flight (DToF) and Indirect Time of Flight (IToF). DToF systems measure the time difference between the transmission and reflection pulse. These systems are typically used for long range applications such as autonomous vehicles. IToF systems measure the phase difference between the transmission and reflection envelope and are used often in flash lidar systems and for short-range applications such as collision avoidance.

GaN FETs and ICs create the high-current pulses with extremely short pulse widths required for higher resolution, longer range, and safer ToF/Lidar systems. These benefits along with the extremely small size and low cost, make GaN the ideal solution helping all ranges of lidar systems see farther, faster, and better.

GaN ICs, such as the EPC21601 and EPC21603, are higher performance, lower cost, smaller size, and provide a lower part count solution than silicon.
